European reference standard is the Euroclass system which has five categories: A1, A2, B, C, D, E, F (F corresponds to “NC” in the M classification system

The Euroclass system also takes two other essential criteria into account (after laboratory testing):

**smoke opacity (quantity and speed), denoted “s” for smoke:

  • s1: low quantity/speed
  • s2: medium quantity/speed
  • s3 : high quantity/speed

**flaming droplets denoted as “d” for droplets

  • d0: no droplets
  • d1: no droplets burning for more than 10 seconds
  • d2: other than d1 or d2

Here is a comparison table (not exact) between the French M classes and the Euroclasses:

  • A1: non-flammable
  • A2 s1 d0: M0
  • A2 s1 d1: M1
  • A2 s2 d0: M1
  • A2 s3 d1: M1

etc.
